Memoteca

Project description

Memoteca was founded in 2004. It is a project of communication and education to re-weave the thread of memory, retracing history across the board through the language of cinema and the internet. The purpose of the project is to enable local communities and schools in the province of Forlì-Cesena in the recovery of his memory through educational tours and cultural events that help to make fertile the soil of the present, with the full knowledge of its past.
The project Memoteca is an online portal updated by a small editorial staff. Neither a museum nor a deposit of stories, but a living and dynamic archive, where memories, stories, dramas, people's dreams are "preserved" as tools for education and training pathways and further change processes aimed at developing the social, cultural and political centre of the community. The real life that human stories recount and that must not be lost, can now become part of a project of Memory to create new social cohesion. Memoteca is responsible for collecting memories in the form of video interviews, usually in collaboration with local schools.
The project was conceived by ViaTerrea (Association of Social Promotion) in partnership with the Province of Forlì-Cesena (Department of Culture), in collaboration with the Provincial Coordination for the Places of Memory, the Institute for the History of the Resistance and the Contemporary Age Forlì-Cesena and with the patronage of the Legislative Assembly of the Emilia-Romagna region. It is a project for communication and education to re-weave the thread of memory, retracing history across the board through the language of cinema and the internet.

How was the project innovative?

Through the participatory involvement of groups of young people (students) and elderly groups, who, together, have created educational workshops and cultural tours, ending with public events where kids and older people exhibit their work to the public and the final video they produced; through the use of film language, such as interactive methods of collecting memories and the use of the Internet as a network of sharing the material; through the attempt to transform, in an educational way, the stories collected, trying to bring about these issues (racism, abandonment of the countryside, immigration, war, etc...) the emotions and energies from the history of the 1900.

How is the project linked to the theme of 20th century European memory?

The core of the video interviews deal with the theme of World War II in Italy (particularly in Emilia Romagna) in addition to a series of video interviews conducted in Poland, in the extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau Auschwitz. Many of the interviews are done by direct witnesses of European history in the 1900, an invaluable source for the generations of today.
